The Microsoft Language Development Centre (MLDC) was founded in 2005. This development centre, integrated in the Portuguese Microsoft subsidiary, has been dedicated to local (speech) language development. In 2012, MLDC was integrated in the Information Platform and Experience (IPE) group of the Online Services Division (OSD), contributing to their long-term plans in the following three focused areas:
Deliver a scalable data collection platform for IPE, including SDK/API, controls and best practices for developing data collection tools, supporting various locales, different data sources, multimodal data types and different collection methods (including crowdsourcing);
Provide language expert support for IPE, leveraging and growing the existing ecosystem of experts to deliver on the language expansion plans for Microsoft products;
Leverage MLDC to explore European talent, investigating the potential to attract, develop and retain in Microsoft, natural language and machine learning scientific talent, from the European pool.
